8th Grade Communications- Upcoming Events

To the parents/guardians of our 8th grade class,

We are planning some fun activities for your 8th graders during  the last week of this school year and are writing to ask for your financial support.  ALL students will be able to participate whether you donate or not.  Please send cash, or a check made out to VVMS, to your student’s science teacher.  Your student will be given a receipt if you donate cash and your canceled check is your receipt if you donate via check.  Here are some things were are looking into:

Entire class pool party at College Park (we need to hire lifeguards and bring water to drink).

Entire class “make your own ice crèam sundae" party (yummy supplies needed).

We are looking into offering different electives that they can choose during the week such as a painting class with an artist teaching the class (approx. $25 per student) karaoke, volleyball, softball.  Wii bowling, just to name a few.

Thanks in advance for your $1.00, $5.00, $20.00 donations.  Any amount  will help make the celebration of the end of their middle school years memorable.

Looking for Leaders!

We are recruiting 20 middle school girls entering 7th or 8th grade in the Fall 2015 who:

  • have a strong academic record
  • exhibit strong leadership skills
  • have had exposure to computing or robotics or have a strong interest in technology
  • can pick up new material quickly

Registration Fee for Participation: FREE (Space Limited).
(Lunch will not be provided.)

Thanks to the Patrick and Shirley Campbell Foundation, Valley View will be hosting a Girls in Robotics Leadership (GIRL) camp June 15-19, from 8 am - 5 pm.  This camp has been designed by the C-STEM Center at UC Davis in order to motivate girls to learn computing and STEM concepts through a fun and exciting robotics-based curriculum. We hope this leadership camp will enable them to serve as leaders and inspire other young girls to gain interest in science and technology.  The GIRL Camp is free for camp participants, and girls from at least two different middle schools are invited to participate.

Girls who are currently in sixth and seventh grade may apply to participate. Space is limited, and applications are due by April 30.

Career Day Volunteer Speakers Needed

The 8th grade class is looking for volunteer speakers to speak to the students on May 15th from 12:30 to 2:15.
Speakers would share about their careers, discuss the training needed to qualify for their careers, and answer questions from the 8th grade students.
We would prepare a format for speakers to follow to make it easy. It is a great way to help Valley View 8th graders hear about different careers and how the adults worked to qualify for their careers. Contact Joe Hemsley at hemsleyj@mdusd.org  to volunteer or to request further information.   Thanks!
